Team preparing equipment for a removal job

Health and Safety Policy for Scotland Removals

Scotland Removals is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of all staff, customers and members of the public affected by our removal operations. This policy sets out the standards and practices that our Scotland removal service follows to manage risk, prevent harm and promote a positive safety culture. Our objective is to deliver safe moving and storage services while minimising hazards associated with lifting, transport and property handling.

We recognise the importance of clear responsibilities and effective management systems. The senior management team will ensure that adequate resources are allocated to safety, that training and supervision are provided, and that policies are regularly reviewed. Every employee and contractor working with Scotland Removals is expected to co-operate with safety procedures, report hazards and take reasonable care for their own wellbeing and that of others.

Loading van during a residential move The scope of this policy covers all activities carried out by our removals in Scotland operations, including packing, loading, unloading, vehicle operation, storage handling and use of mechanical aids. Key elements include risk assessment, incident reporting, maintenance of equipment, safe vehicle operations and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). We will apply consistent standards across all jobs, whether domestic or commercial relocations, to maintain a uniform level of workplace safety.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Risk assessments will be conducted for routine tasks and for non-standard or complex moves. These assessments will identify hazards, evaluate likelihood and severity, and determine control measures to reduce risk to an acceptable level. Controls may include task redesign, use of trolleys and lifting aids, team lifts, and temporary protection for floors and staircases. Job-specific safe systems of work will be documented and communicated to all personnel.

Supervisor conducting a safety assessment Training and competence are central to our approach. All staff employed by the Scottish removals company will receive induction training covering manual handling, vehicle safety, PPE, hazards associated with household goods (including fragile and heavy items) and emergency procedures. Refresher training will be provided regularly, and competency will be assessed through observation and review. We prioritise skill-building to prevent injuries and ensure consistent, professional service delivery.

To support safe working we will maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe condition through planned maintenance schedules and pre-use checks. Drivers and crew will be instructed to verify that lifting equipment, straps, ramps and lifting aids are serviceable before use. Faulty equipment will be taken out of service and reported immediately. Preventative maintenance reduces the risk of breakdowns and unsafe conditions on site and on the road.

Operational Controls and Personal Safety

Operational controls include planning routes, assessing parking and access at pickup and delivery sites, and ensuring appropriate loading strategies. Manual handling best practices will be enforced: plan the lift, keep the load close to the body, use leg muscles, and ask for assistance when needed. Workers are required to wear suitable clothing and PPE, such as gloves and high-visibility garments, when task conditions demand them.

Crew using protective equipment while packing Contractors and temporary personnel used by the removals firm will be required to demonstrate their competence and to follow our health and safety arrangements while on assignment. Subcontracted labour will be briefed on site-specific arrangements and supervised as necessary. Regular checks will ensure that third-party practices align with the standards expected of our own removals team. Consistency and oversight protect everyone involved in a moving operation.

First aid kit and emergency response setup Incident reporting and investigation form a critical part of continuous improvement. All accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported promptly, investigated to identify root causes, and acted upon to prevent recurrence. Findings will be used to update risk assessments, revise procedures and inform training. Open reporting without blame encourages learning and improves safety outcomes.

Emergency preparedness is a required element of our safety arrangements. Crews will be briefed on emergency contact procedures, first-aid arrangements and safe evacuation from work sites and vehicles. First-aid kits will be carried where appropriate, and at least one trained first-aider will be available on larger operations. Planning includes contingencies for adverse weather, vehicle incidents and unexpected hazards at customer premises.

Record keeping and performance monitoring will be maintained to ensure the policy is working effectively. Records of risk assessments, training, maintenance, incidents and reviews will be retained and periodically audited. Key performance indicators relating to safety will be tracked and reported at management reviews to support accountability and continuous improvement.

The policy will be reviewed at regular intervals and following significant incidents, changes to operations, or when new hazards are identified. Scotland Removals is committed to continual improvement: we will update procedures, invest in safer equipment and reinforce a culture where safety is integral to every removal. By following this health and safety policy, our Scottish removal service aims to protect people, property and the environment while delivering reliable and professional moving services.
